ASTM D56 – Tag Closed Cup Method
ASTM D56 is used to determine the flash point of low-viscosity and volatile liquids with flash points below 93°C. It is commonly used for solvents, light fuels, and volatile petroleum fractions.
Method Principle
- Sample placed in sealed Tag test cup
- Controlled heating at defined rate
- Ignition source applied at temperature intervals
- Flash detected visually
Because of the small cup volume, heat transfer and ramp control are critical.

ASTM D56
- Lower flash range liquids
- Small cup design
- Used for volatile solvents
- Less suitable for viscous oils
ASTM D93
- Higher flash range
- Larger closed cup system
- Used for diesel, lube oils
- More robust stirring system

A deviation in heating rate by even 0.5°C/min can alter flash point result.
