ASTM D56 – Tag Closed Cup Method

ASTM D56 is used to determine the flash point of low-viscosity and volatile liquids with flash points below 93°C. It is commonly used for solvents, light fuels, and volatile petroleum fractions.

Method Principle

Because of the small cup volume, heat transfer and ramp control are critical.

ASTM D56 vs ASTM D93

ASTM D56

  • Lower flash range liquids
  • Small cup design
  • Used for volatile solvents
  • Less suitable for viscous oils

ASTM D93

  • Higher flash range
  • Larger closed cup system
  • Used for diesel, lube oils
  • More robust stirring system

Critical Control Parameters

A deviation in heating rate by even 0.5°C/min can alter flash point result.
