What Is HART?
HART (Highway Addressable Remote Transducer) is a hybrid communication protocol that combines traditional 4–20 mA analog signaling with digital data communication.
It allows technicians to access configuration, diagnostics, and device information without interrupting the analog signal.
- Analog signal = process variable
- Digital signal = configuration & diagnostics
- Works over existing 4–20 mA wiring
How HART Works
HART uses Frequency Shift Keying (FSK) communication superimposed on the 4–20 mA signal.
- 1200 Hz = digital “1”
- 2200 Hz = digital “0”
- Analog current unaffected
This allows simultaneous analog measurement and digital communication.
